The first Oscar in Ukrainian history was awarded to Mstyslav Chernov’s documentary “20 Days in Mariupol,” a harrowing first-person film that sheds light on the brutal devastation of the aggressive Kremlin war and exposes the truth about Russia’s crimes, providing testimony of the suffering of Mariupol’s residents during the city’s destruction. The film’s impact is evident, and the director’s emotional acceptance speech emphasizing the desire for Russia never to invade Ukraine resonated with millions of Ukrainians worldwide.
The award has caused obvious annoyance in Russia due to the film’s portrayal of the Russian war crimes and its actual impact on the people of Mariupol, as well as the director’s strong condemnation of Russia’s actions. Russia’s reaction to the film’s win reflects its sensitivity to the international spotlight on its military actions in Ukraine, as evidenced by the refusal of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to comment on the documentary and the film’s portrayal of Russia’s crimes.
This milestone for Ukraine’s film industry marks the country’s first Oscar win. It serves as a powerful tool in shaping the global narrative about the war and the truth about Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
