Russian crimes against cultural heritage in occupied territories

Protecting cultural heritage in occupied Ukrainian territories from Russia’s control is essential for several reasons. Firstly, cultural heritage represents a nation’s shared history, identity, and values, and its preservation is crucial for maintaining a sense of continuity and unity among the Ukrainian people. Russia’s control over these artefacts and sites may lead to distortion or erasure of Ukraine’s historical narrative.

Secondly, cultural heritage sites often hold significant artistic, architectural, and historical value on a global scale. These treasures belong to all of humanity, and their destruction or misappropriation denies the world the opportunity to appreciate and learn from them.

Furthermore, safeguarding cultural heritage is essential for post-war rebuilding efforts. These sites can symbolise hope, resilience, and the possibility of a brighter future, helping communities heal and come together.
