Russia attacks Ukraine: live update, April 2022

23:22 Energoatom

The occupiers in Enerhodar began to create fake authorities. Initially, 34 members of the so-called “Enerhodar Public Council for Self-Organization” gathered and elected collaborator as the head of the so-called “city administration.” After that, he single-handedly “dismissed” the legally elected incumbent mayor Dmytro Orlov, and at the same time all the heads and members of the executive bodies of the city authorities. These decisions have no legal force or legal meaning.

22:28 Centre for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine

Centre for Countering Disinformation collected fakes, disinformation, and manipulations that the enemy spread on April 6, 2022:

  • Disinformation: the Russian Defense Ministry warned that “Ukrainian troops are preparing a provocation with poisonous substances in the Kharkiv region, therefore, the Security Service of Ukraine mined the chlorine storage to destroy it and accuse the Russian Federation of explosion”;
  • Manipulation: after the Russian occupiers’ defeat in northern Ukraine, the propaganda media returned to creating content that “Western countries supply Ukraine with low-quality and obsolete weapons”;
  • Fake: even though the 503rd Marine Corps Battalion denied the claims of Russian propagandists about the capture of Ukrainian defenders of Mariupol, the enemy continues to produce destructive content in this regard.

21:26 Evropeiska Pravda with reference to Ceske Noviny

EU ambassadors at a meeting on Wednesday failed to decide on the fifth package of sanctions against Russia, proposed by the European Commission on Tuesday.

Some countries have called for clarification on the proposed embargo on Russian coal imports and a ban on mooring Russian ships in EU ports.

The meeting of ambassadors will continue on Thursday.

21:15 President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with the Turkish channel Habertürk

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is convinced that humanitarian goods from the Ukrainian side are not allowed to Mariupol, as the Russian side fears that “the world will see what is happening there.”

Negotiations are underway on Turkey’s mediating role in evacuating the wounded from Mariupol on ships.

20:48 Petro Andryushchenko, advisor to the mayor of Mariupol

The Russians began the forced mobilization of men in the part of Mariupol under their control.

According to Andryushchenko, the mobilized are planned to be used as “cannon fodder” in street fights in the city.

Britain has frozen the assets of Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank.

In addition, eight other Russian oligarchs have come under British sanctions, including Gazprombank Chairman Andrei Akimov and Novatek co-owner Leonid Michelson. The sanctions package also bans investment in Russia.

18:58 General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Operational information as of 18.00 on 06.04.2022 regarding the Russian invasion

The forty-second day of the heroic opposition of the Ukrainian people to the Russian military invasion continues.

  • The enemy continues to prepare for an offensive operation in eastern Ukraine in order to establish full control over the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The Russian occupiers are regrouping troops and conducting reconnaissance, trying to improve the tactical position of individual units in the South Bug area and gain a foothold on the administrative borders of the Kherson region.
  • The main focus of the enemy’s efforts is to conduct offensive operations in order to break through the defenses of the Joint Forces in the Donetsk direction. It is also trying to take full control of the city of Mariupol.
  • The regrouping of troops and the restoration of combat capability of the Central Military District units deployed to the Bryansk and Kursk oblasts are nearing completion.
  • Training and relocation of units of the occupying forces of the armed forces of the Russian Federation to the territory of Ukraine is underway. The enemy planned to move units of the 38th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 35th All-Military Army of the Eastern Military District from the territory of the Republic of Belarus to the Belgorod Region. The movement of some units of the Central Military District to this region is also recorded.
  • In the Volyn and Polissya directions, no significant changes were found in the position and condition of the enemy troops. Units of the Eastern Military District withdrawn to the territory of the Gomel region are completing the regrouping.
  • The movement of enemy units to railway stations for loading and subsequent redeployment is noted.
  • The enemy continues to block Kharkiv in the Slobozhansky direction. Mostly at night, the Russian occupiers shell the city using multiple rocket launchers, artillery and mortars. In the area of the city of Izyum, the enemy did not take active action. By forces of separate divisions of the 20th all-military and 1st tank armies of the Western military district it carries out regrouping.
  • To increase the efficiency of the transfer of military cargo, the enemy began to use the railway. The arrival of railway echelons with weapons and military equipment from the Valuyki station (Russian Federation) to the Kupyansk railway station (Ukraine) has been recorded.
  • In the Donetsk and Luhansk directions, the enemy’s main efforts are focused on hostilities in the areas of the settlements of Popasna and Rubizhne and the establishment of control over the city of Mariupol. Trying to improve the tactical position.
  • Continues to fire in most areas.
  • The enemy carried out artillery shelling in the areas of Kreminna, Pisky, Ocheretino, Rozivka, Novobahmutivka, Novosilka Druha, Marinka and Krasnohorivka.
  • In the areas of Popasna, Stepny, Novotoshkivsky, Rubizhny, Severodonetsk and Solodky, the enemy carried out assault operations, but was unsuccessful.
  • The storming of the city of Mariupol continues, while the enemy is actively using aircraft.
  • In the South Bug direction, the enemy continues to shell the settlements of Shcherbaki, Komyshuvakha, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Huliaipilske, Lukyanivske, Preobrazhenka and Huliai Pole.
  • As a result of offensive actions of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy lost control over the settlement of Osokorivka.
  • The defense forces continue to hold certain borders, destroy the enemy and liberate Ukrainian lands from the invader.

Let’s win together! Glory to Ukraine!

18:08 Iryna Vereshchuk, Vice Prime Minister

Military administrations have called for the evacuation of residents of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts as long as possible.

18:03 Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration

In anticipation of the offensive of the occupying troops of the Russian Federation, the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration advises residents of Lozova and Barvinkove to evacuate by trains

16:20 Kyiv City State Administration

In 40 days of full-scale Russian invasion, in Kyiv 89 civilians were killed, including 4 children, 398 were injured, including 20 children.

167 houses of various types, 44 schools, 26 kindergartens and 1 orphanage were damaged. 11 administrative buildings were also damaged.

15:54 Iryna Vereshchuk, Vice Prime Minister

The Russian occupiers are massively kidnapping peaceful Ukrainians, but international humanitarian law prohibits the exchange of Russian prisoners of war for civilian Ukrainians.

“We have a lot of civilians being held hostage – mayors, journalists, volunteers, priests, women who worked in retail – just people who have never taken up arms. Today they are hostages of terrorists. And we have no one to replace them.

I ask the people I’m negotiating with: “We need to capture Russians all over the world and put them up as an exchange fund?! How can we get you to release our journalists and our priests. What can we do – we are a civilized country, not pirates, not terrorists. We can’t capture civilians”.

The Minister explained that the Geneva Conventions prohibit the exchange of prisoners of war for civilians. Therefore, the Russians are deliberately committing war crimes by taking peaceful Ukrainians hostage.

15:20 Herman Halushchenko, Minister of Energy of Ukraine

The situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP remains the same – they are physically at the station. This is from 300 to 500 military and about 50 units of heavy equipment around the perimeter of the station. At a certain time, 11 people from Rosatom appeared at the station. We all know them, we have identified them from which of the Russian NPP they came. Now they are there and our staff is also there.

As for the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the occupiers left it.

“There is information that this happened as the departure of the Horde with the removal of everything that is there – from forks to computers. In the coming days, we will see what is left there,” – said the Minister.

15:01 Ministry of defence of Ukraine

Borodyanka, Kyiv region.

Only 42 days ago, 13,000 people lived in this village.

russian occupiers brought death and destruction here. They wanted to do the same with the whole of Ukraine.

But our army fought back. Borodyanka is under the Ukrainian flag again.

14:40  Serhiy Haidai, head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration

Again we have a cynical shelling of residential areas of Severodonetsk. The flames engulfed 10 high-rise buildings, a shopping center, garages – no strategic, military facilities. “Russian world” is destroying life in Luhansk region.

14:03 The Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine warns: the enemy uses the thesis of EU High Representative Josep Borrell for manipulation

A number of Russian media outlets spread out of context J. Borrell’s phrase that the Russian ruble “is well opposed to sanctions”

Based on this thesis, the Kremlin is producing propaganda materials in which it emphasizes that even world politicians and Europe seem to recognize the strength of the Russian economy, which will not be affected by sanctions

Mr Borrell did talk about the Russian economy on Spanish Radio COPE, but in his speech the diplomat insisted on tightening sanctions, as the existing restrictions are not enough to stop Putin and his entourage from fighting Ukraine. That is, J. Borrell did not express admiration for the Russian economy

Sanctions against Russia imposed for an indefinite period, it is obvious that the country does not immediately feel the global consequences of restrictions.

Iran has been living under sanctions for 40 years and has been looking for ways to lift the restrictions

13:42 Office of the President of Ukraine

From the President’s address to the people and politicians of the Republic of Ireland:

“They (the occupiers) are consistently destroying fuel storage facilities, product distribution centers, destroying even conventional agricultural machinery and bypassing fields. They are constantly passing everything they leave behind.

Why are they doing this? Because they also consider hunger as their weapon, a weapon against ordinary people. As a tool to dominate”.

“As a result of the Russian shelling, 927 educational institutions and 285 hospitals were destroyed or damaged. The occupiers fired even 73 ambulances”.

“Let’s join forces and show that Ukraine and Ireland together can do much more than the largest country on the planet planned to destroy. Grateful to Ireland! Glory to Ukraine!”

13:39 Adviser to the Mayor of Mariupol Petro Andriushchenko

The occupiers are carrying out mass sweeping and looting. They are trying to identify all the “Nazis” – everyone who does not support the occupation. Russian troops have set up a filtration camp in Mangush near Mariupol, and they continue to forcibly deport people to Russia.

13:17 Suspilne

The occupiers fired at the town of Zolochiv, Kharkiv region, from the side of the temporarily captured Kozacha Lopan. There is one dead, three wounded, and destroyed houses.

“We have it now every day: in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening. In general, since the beginning of the war, we have 10 dead, 34 wounded, three of them are children,” told the head of the community Viktor Kovalenko.

13:08 Ukrainska Pravda

The atrocities of the Russian occupiers continue to strike with cold-bloodedness and nonsense at the same time. In Vorzel, the Russians hung the heads of the chickens they killed on clotheslines. The animal protection organization UAnimals reported another abuse of animals.

Hundreds of tortures, murders, and animal cruelties have been inflicted on Russian soldiers. In Borodianka alone, in the Kyiv region, more than 300 dogs died in the shelter as a result of the occupation.

A large number of zoos throughout Ukraine have repeatedly come under enemy shelling and bombing. In particular, the Mykolayiv Zoo, on which the Russians dropped shells and cluster missiles, is in a difficult situation.

The enemy also practically destroyed the eco-park in Kharkiv. If it weren’t for Ukrainian volunteers, predators would have to sleep.

An ostrich farm in Yasnogorodka, Kyiv Region, was also hit by enemy fire, killing dozens of animals. Some of them – from direct fire from enemy weapons.

13:03 Ministry of Internal Affairs

The head of the Main Investigation Department said that about 1,300 criminal proceedings had been initiated in Kyiv region on various facts. It is about waging an aggressive war, violating the rules and traditions of war.

13:00 Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine

Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk called for joining the release of Ukrainian hostages by representatives of international legal organizations.

“Currently, there are about 600 Russian prisoners in Ukraine,” the official reminded. “We are constantly negotiating their exchange for our defenders. We compile lists and involve the International Committee of the Red Cross in the process. But there is another problem. The Russians are holding hostages not only from the military, but many civilian Ukrainians: mayors, journalists, volunteers, clergy, and ordinary workers who have never taken up arms.”

As Iryna Vereshchuk explained, Ukraine has no one to change them for, because Russia sets a condition “the military – for the military, civilians – for civilians”

“Russia has ratified international humanitarian law and now does not comply with it. The exchange of troops for civilians is prohibited by the Geneva Convention. That is why I appeal to the international community and human rights organizations to demand the release of Ukrainian civilians from the occupiers! That’s the only way out of this situation,” stated Vereshchuk.

12:53 Mariupol City Council

Russian mobile crematoria have started operating in Mariupol. After wide international publicity of the genocide in Bucha, Russia’s top leadership ordered to destroy any evidence of crimes committed by its army in Mariupol.

A week ago, cautious estimates put the death toll at 5,000 in Mariupol. However, given the size of the city, catastrophic destruction, the duration of the blockade, and fierce resistance, tens of thousands of civilians from Mariupol could have fallen victim to the occupiers.

The Russians left all the dirty work to the collaborators. Eyewitnesses report that the Russians recruited locals and terrorists of the so-called “DNR” to special brigades. They collect and burn the bodies of residents of Mariupol murdered by Russians.

The work of these groups is directly coordinated by the self-proclaimed mayor-collaborator Kostiantyn Ivashchenko.

12:13 Journalist Oleh Baturin

The prisoners, who were kept in the basement of a police building seized by the Russian Nazis in Nova Kakhovka, said they heard the voice and name of Vitalii Peretiatko, a former deputy of the Novokakhovka City Council among other prisoners.

The Russians constantly torture captured. People persuade to kill them to not suffer pain after the brutal beatings.

The prisoners said that they had heard tortured Anti-Terrorist Operation veterans required to confess that they had worked in the “Right sector” and threatened to send them – someone to Donetsk (to rebuild the “city” broken by the Benderites) and someone to Crimea

(to judge and create their own documented database of “evidence” and “atrocities” of “right-wingers”).

11:59 Security Service of Ukraine

In the conversations of the occupiers intercepted by the Security Service, Russian schoolchildren are asking to kill Ukrainians as soon as possible.

“I ask you: kill all Ukrainians as soon as possible and come home,” the sister wrote to her brother-occupier. In response, the brother, laughing, brag about it in a telephone conversation with a relative.

11:39 Suspilne

The Ukrainian Cultural Foundation has created an interactive “Map of Cultural Losses”. According to preliminary estimates, as of April 1, 2022, more than 150 different monuments and objects of culture were either partially damaged or destroyed.

11:21 SuspilneIn the Kherson region, the Russian military kidnapped the regional council deputy Serhii Maksymenko and his son. Their location is unknown.

10:23 Ukrainska Pravda citing the head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration Serhii Haidai

Former mayor of Rubizhne Serhiy Khortiv not only collaborated with the Russian invaders but also passed on information about people with a pro-Ukrainian position to the occupiers. Haidai stated that Ukraine was able to “break the plans of the occupiers, who wanted to stage how the mayor hands over the keys [to the city] to the occupiers, and how they are welcomed.” The head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration explained that he had submitted a petition to the president, who had signed a decree establishing a military-civil administration in Rubizhne. The mayor lost his powers and ceased to be useful to the occupiers.

10:04 Centre for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine

Russia continues to use politicians and the former US military to spread disinformation about Ukraine. Former US Army Reserve Officer Tulsi Gabbard has been working for a foreign audience for Kremlin money for several years. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, this “Western expert” says that “the United States is guilty of Russia’s military aggression” because it “provoked” the aggressor for many years. “Washington’s ruling elite wants to kill as many Russians as possible by the hands of Ukrainians,” stated Gabbard.

Tulsi Gabbard has been repeatedly accused of links with Putin, but that has not stopped her from acting as an expert on Fox News. In addition to the topic of war, Gabbard is actively spreading disinformation about the development of weapons of mass destruction in bio laboratories of Ukraine.

Despite the fact that Russian disinformation and propaganda aimed at Western audiences are increasingly being debunked, the Kremlin still has many foreign propagandists on the payroll.

9:59 General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The total combat losses of the enemy from 24.02 to 06.04 were approximately:

personnel ‒ about 18600,

tanks ‒ 684,

APV  ‒ 1861,

artillery systems – 332,

MLRS ‒ 107,

anti-aircraft warfare systems ‒ 55,

aircraft – 150,

helicopters – 135,

vehicles ‒ 1324,

boats / cutters ‒ 7,

fuel tanks ‒ 76,

UAV operational-tactical level ‒ 96,

special equipment ‒ 25,

mobile SRBM system ‒ 4.

Data are being updated. The calculation is complicated by the high intensity of hostilities.

9:51 Head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration Maksym Kozytskyi

Ukrainian Air Defence Forces shot down two enemy cruise missiles over Radekhiv. The wreckage fell on the outskirts of the city, resulting in 3 explosions at an unused civilian infrastructure. There was a fire at the site of the explosion, which was immediately removed by SES forces. No one was injured.

8:40 Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine

As of the morning of April 6, 2022, more than 446 children suffered in Ukraine as a result of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation.

167 children were killed and 279 received injuries of varying severity during the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Children suffered the most in Kyiv – 78, Donetsk – 81, Kharkiv – 64, Chernihiv – 49, Mykolaiv – 39, Luhansk – 31, Zaporizhzhia – 22, Kherson – 29, the capital – 16, Sumy – 16, Zhytomyr – 15 regions.

These data are not conclusive, as it is not possible to inspect the sites of shelling in areas of active hostilities and the temporarily occupied territories. In particular, in Mariupol, in some areas of Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Luhansk regions.

  • On March 25, in the Kharkiv region, a 13-year-old girl died as a result of the shelling of residential buildings in the villages of Mala Rohan and Vilkhivka by the Russian military.
  • On April 4, two young children were injured as a result of the shelling by the Russian Armed Forces in Avdiivka, Donetsk Region.

The deportation of children from Ukraine to the Russian Federation continues:

  • 12 children were abducted from the Regional Children’s Tuberculosis Center in Mariupol by the Russian military.
  • The mother-educator of the family-type orphanage together with her 8 fostered, 3 own, and 3 adopted children were forcibly deported from Mariupol to the city of Saransk in the Russian Federation.

7:25 Head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Valentyn Reznichenko

The enemy attacked the region from the air and hit the oil depot and one of the plants. The fuel depot was destroyed. Rescuers are still extinguishing the conflagration.

7:00 Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

OHCHR recorded 3,675 civilian casualties in Ukraine: 1,480 killed and 2,195 injured. Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, and missile and airstrikes.

OHCHR believes that the actual figures are considerably higher, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration. This concerns, for example, Mariupol and Volnovakha (Donetsk region), Izium (Kharkiv region), Popasna (Luhansk region), and Borodianka (Kyiv region), where there are allegations of numerous civilian casualties.

6:57 General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The operational update regarding the Russian invasion on 06.00 on April 6, 2022

The forty-second day of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people to a Russian military invasion began.

  • A Russian federation continues to conduct full-scale armed aggression against Ukraine. The enemy’s main efforts are focused on preparing for an offensive operation aimed at establishing full control over the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
  • The threat of Russian enemy use of naval, air, and ground-based missile weapons continues. The Russian occupiers are inflicting fire on the defense complex, logistics infrastructure, and residential areas of cities.
  • At the same time, the Russian enemy is trying to improve the tactical position in the South Buh direction. The use of the territory of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian-Moldavian Republic to support the offensive operation in this direction is not ruled out. Preparations for receiving aircraft are being carried out at Tiraspol airfield.
  • The Russian enemy does not abandon attempts to involve mercenaries from other countries in hostilities against Ukraine to make up for its losses in manpower. At the same time, the use of mercenaries will not have a significant impact on the course of hostilities, given their small number.
  • The command of the 200th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade (Pechenga, Murmansk region) of the 14th Army Corps, which involved two battalions tactical groups in the war with Ukraine, trains servicemen to make up for losses. According to available information, the total loss of the brigade in manpower is about 30%. One battalion tactical group was destroyed, and the other was withdrawn to the area of recovery in the Belgorod region.
  • There are no signs of the formation of offensive groups in the Volyn direction. Certain units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus continue to carry out tasks to cover the Ukrainian-Belarusian border.
  • The occupiers did not take any active action in the Polissya direction. Some of the enemy units withdrawn from this direction are located on the territory of the Republic of Belarus. Recovery measures are ongoing, presumably to regroup and strengthen other groups. It is possible that Russian troops will not leave the territory of the Republic of Belarus in order to restrain the actions of the Defense Forces of Ukraine and prevent their transfer to other areas. Another goal is to assist the Republic of Belarus in covering part of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border.
  • In the Siversky direction, the restoration of the enemy’s Russian occupation units, which had previously been withdrawn to the Bryansk and Kursk regions of the Russian Federation, is underway.
  • In the Slobozhansky direction, the enemy continues to block the city of Kharkiv and launch artillery shelling in its separate areas.
  • According to available information, the losses of the 236th Artillery Brigade of the 20th Combined Arms Army are about 20 percent of the personnel and weapons. This significantly reduced the intensity of the brigade’s actions.
  • In the Izium direction, the Russian occupiers did not abandon their intentions to create a strike group and continue the offensive in the direction of the settlements of Sloviansk and Barvinkove.
  • In the Donetsk direction, the enemy is trying to improve the tactical position of its units. Continues to carry out assault operations in the areas of Popasna, Stepne, Novotoshkivske, Rubizhne, Sievierodonetsk, and Solodke. It is not successful.
  • The Russian occupiers continue to actively use munitions prohibited by international humanitarian law. Attempts to storm Mariupol do not stop. The defenders of the city held a heroic defense for more than forty days, restraining the overwhelming forces of the Russian invaders.
  • In the Tavriia direction, in the area of the settlement of Basan, the movement of some units from the 58th Combined Arms Army was recorded, probably for the purpose of regrouping forces.
  • In the South Buh area, the enemy is taking measures to restore combat capability and take measures to engineer equipment positions. Continues to terrorize civilians in the temporarily occupied territories of the Kherson region.
  • As a result of the offensive actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy lost control over the settlements of Dobrianka, Novovoznesenske, and Trudoliubivka. Fighting continues in the area of the settlement of Oleksandrivka.
  • The group of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed 8 cruise missiles the previous day. The Air Force aircraft continued to support the actions of the ground forces of the Defence Forces and launched airstrikes on the occupying forces.

Latvia has frozen Russian real estate for more than 100 million euros

Currently, the value of Russian real estate frozen in Latvia due to sanctions exceeds 100 million euros, but it is expected that it may increase.

This was stated by the Minister of Justice of Latvia Janis Bordans.

The Minister noted that the frozen fleet is also estimated at several million euros.

Bordans said that no information was provided on the assets of legal entities, which may be even more valuable. These assets may include, in particular, various dangerous goods in Latvian ports, which the Latvian state “must take special care of”.
